A member of the Papilionidae or Swallowtail family, the Chequered Swallowtail does not have a tail but shares the black and yellow colouring of many of the other swallowtails. It is widespread throughout the far east and northern Australia.
Compositionally I like the strong diagonal created by the leaf, and the leaf and butterfly form a triangle. The background looks rather busy here, but in a print this is less noticeable.
