Eastern Cracker Butterfly

Eastern Cracker or White Peacock Butterfly
Anartia jatrophae

At first glance this butterfly looks rather drab, especialy in flight. However, when at rest the intricate detail in the wings becomes more apparent. I would have prefered to photograph it full-on to maximise the depth of field, but one of the limitations of a butterfly house is that you are restricted to the paths and can't always position yourself as you would like.

It took me some time to identify this butterfly. I found several very similar species, buit nothing with the exact patterning. Then when I did find it, the same species was called different names in different areas.

The White Peacock is mainly found in the south eastern USA.
