This insect was originally identified by my local University Entolmology Group as an Empid or "Robber" Fly. I have since been told by another expert that it is in fact a Scathophagid (dung) fly. I would not know either if they flew up and bit me (which this one fortunately did not do) so I offer both possibilities.
It was photographed on some gorse bushes on Southampton Common. Hand held using natural light, so not as sharp as I would like, but I like the muted colours.
