 Luna Moth

Luna Moth (American Moon-moth)
Actias luna

A striking moth found in Mexico and the U.S. As with most moths, easy to photograph as they are relatively inactive during the day. Fairly large and heavy, so requires a sturdy perch. The feathered antennae on this male are used to locate females by following their pheromone trail.

This specimen was one of several that were sent to me as chrysalises by a butterfly breeder friend in the USA.

Photographed using 100 mm macro lens on bellows (natural light).
